Choco Tacos

If you’ve been holed up in your house without a thermometer, a television set or an Internet connection, there’s a good chance you don’t know it’s hot outside. Yep, summer has come to roost in Texas.

In the spirit of the season, I picked up two boxes of Choco Tacos dessert tacos from Klondike* The store was out of the Peanut Butter option. So, I went with the Original and Chocolate flavors, each containing four tacos in a box.

What I chose from the freezer section of my local Kroger wasn’t the frosty equivalent of barbacoa de cachete. It was a soggy U-shaped waffle cone with chocolate-striped vanilla (the Original) or chocolate (Chocolate) ice cream crammed into the fold sealed by a chocolate shell pimpled with peanuts (the Original) or rice (Chocolate).

Both were the Choco Tacos’ sole appealing components—aside from the 220 calories per serving (one taco). Then, surprisingly, when chewed into a paste at the back of the mouth, the waffle-cone shell released flavor, a tart jig. Too little; too late.

There is more enjoyment inside a pack of moldy vanilla wafer strips rooted to the back of a bodega’s rusty shelf.

Obviously, I would do a lot for a taco.

Brace yourself: nonfat milk, sugar, corn syrup, milk fat, cocoa processed with alkali, whey and maltodextrin. It also includes a lot of soy, gums and a variety of oil.
